Refresh nectar before it clouds
Use one part plain white sugar to four parts water, allow it to cool, and skip red dye. Replace nectar every two to three days in warm weather, or sooner if it turns cloudy. Do not top off old nectar.
Clean the feeder thoroughly
Wash every opening and crevice when you refill the feeder. UGA Extension recommends frequent cleaning, especially during warm weather, to prevent mold and bacterial growth. Choose a feeder you can take apart easily.
Keep the flowers, too
Leave healthy late blooms in place and plan a sequence of flowers for next year. A feeder complements a planted garden; it does not replace diverse flowers and habitat.
