In the Garden — October 2026
Vegetable Beds: Sow radishes, spinach, kale, and mustard greens for a quick fall crop. Harvest sweet potatoes before frost. Plant garlic and onions for next year’s harvest.
Flowers & Shrubs: Plant pansies, violas, and snapdragons for winter color. Begin planting spring-blooming bulbs if not already done. Divide and transplant perennials while soil is still warm.
General Care: Rake and compost leaves — shredded leaves make excellent mulch or compost feed. Add organic amendments like compost or slow-release lawn & shrub fertilizer to replenish soil before winter rest.
The Wren is October’s lively garden companion. Folklore calls it the king of birds for its bold song, though it is small in stature. Wrens hunt insects in leaf litter, keeping pests in check. Providing brush piles or birdhouses helps them shelter through cold nights.
Garden Trick: Create a brush pile with fallen branches and leaves. It provides shelter for wrens, toads, and beneficial insects, turning autumn cleanup into a gift for garden wildlife.
Full Moon — October 26, 2026 (Hunter’s Moon). Traditionally a moon of preparation, gathering and the turning of the year toward rest.
