Autumn leaf for the fall planting season

Why Fall Is a Great Time to Plant Trees and Shrubs in Georgia

Fall is one of the most forgiving seasons for installing many trees and shrubs in Georgia. Air temperatures begin to ease while the soil often remains warm enough for root growth. That combination can reduce heat stress and give plants time to settle in before next summer.

The first step is choosing a plant suited to the site. Measure the available width, consider mature height, and check sun, soil moisture and drainage. A shrub that fits the empty spot today may outgrow the walkway or foundation within a few seasons. Native and adapted plants can both be excellent choices when the growing conditions are right.

Dig a planting hole broad enough to loosen surrounding soil, but do not bury the top of the root ball below the surrounding grade. Locate the root flare on trees and make sure it remains visible. Heavy clay soils are common around metro Atlanta; correcting drainage problems is more valuable than filling a hole with a pocket of rich potting soil.

After planting, water deeply enough to moisten the root ball and surrounding soil. Newly installed plants still need attention in cool weather, particularly when autumn rainfall is inconsistent. Check moisture before watering; saturated clay is not a sign that the plant needs another drink.

Finish with an even mulch layer over the root zone, leaving a clear ring around trunks and shrub stems. Mulch can moderate soil temperatures and reduce evaporation, but piled against bark it creates avoidable problems.

Fall planting is not a promise of instant maturity. A carefully planned landscape develops over several growing seasons. The payoff is a healthier framework of evergreens, flowering shrubs, seasonal color and trees that fit the space as they grow. Nature by Design ATL designs and installs landscapes for Atlanta and South Metro homeowners, with guidance tailored to the plants and property.
