RELAXING
TRADITIONAL
The Ellisons are active empty nesters who enjoy their work while keeping family close. With grown children and grandchildren visiting often, their home has become a gathering place. The established landscape had served them well for years, but it was beginning to feel tired. They wanted a refreshed design that honored the maturity of their garden while adding color, energy, and ease of maintenance.
DESIGN CHALLENGE
The home’s stately architecture called for a landscape with structure and balance, yet many of the existing plantings had outgrown their scale. Seasonal interest was lacking, and the entrance needed more presence to welcome family and guests year-round. The challenge was to retain what worked, rejuvenate aging areas, and create a design that would look vibrant in every season without becoming high-maintenance.
OUR APPROACH
-
Preserved key evergreens to keep the home grounded and provide year-round structure.
-
Layered in seasonal flowering shrubs and perennials to ensure fresh color in spring, summer, and fall.
-
Simplified the plant palette with durable, low-maintenance varieties suited to Zone 8.
-
Designed crisp foundation beds with soft curves that echo the home’s elegance.
-
Added focal point planters flanking the entry to offer rotating seasonal displays.
